Pop Culture & Corporation: How do Corporation apply social media as advertising? (Weekly Blog Assigment#2)

Today, the corporations use social media as advertising tool to attract customers. For example, many of the corporations have their own Facebook page, or Twitter account. Some of them also start to use Ustream as their part of advertising strategies.

Before I describe about main topic, I'll give you brief definition about Ustream. I assume that most of you guys already know about Facebook and Twitter, so I omit explain about two of those.

Ustream: a website which consists of a network of diverse channels providing a platform for life casting and live video streaming of events online.


As I mentioned, there are so many corporations use social media to attract customers.
Since we have learned about Pop Culture in the class, I will explain about how are Pop Culture and Corporations connected? And, I will explain about the corporation's advertising strategies that relates to social media. The corporations often use Twitter, Ustream, Facebook and You Tube to get customers attention.


Twitter: the Corporations tweet their update service or products information through Twitter to Internet users who follow the companies on Twitter. The advantage that companies use twitter is because they can send up to date information to the potential customers anytime they want.
For example, Hello! Project, the corporation that provide Japanese female pop artists group, has Twitter and they tweet about information of new CD that they are going to release or TV program that their artists was on, and they also tweet about magazines of their artists. This advertising strategy attracts followers to buy CD or magazines.


Twitter + Ustream =Social Stream : Effective way for Corporations to advertising new pop cultural prodcuts (CD, Movies, TV program).

1) Corporation tweet about their new products on Twitter, and they tweet that they are going to have presentation on Ustream.


2) Followers who follow that Corporation watch Ustream live.


3) Since Twitter and Ustream working together, viewers can comment for the corporation during Corporations trasmitting Ustream TV program. This is called social stream.


4) The corporations can get users perspective about new products. This means they can also marketing at the same time.

5) After the Ustream TV program is over, the corporations can put advertisements on Twitter and Ustream.

For example, Hello! Project's official Ustream channel applies social stream system. For the Ustream, they first shows the TV program of artist group and after the program ends, and they shows advertisements.

Benefit of using Ustream
The primary reason of the corporations use Ustream is because of lower cost. Since it is free to use Ustream to have television program, the corporations are able to distribute many advertisements. 


Facebook: the corporations provide their own Facebook page to gather customers. The strategy of advertisements are basically same as Twitter because Twitter and Facebook work together. But, Facebook can upload more photos that may attracts customer interest.

For example, AKB48, Japanese popular female idol group, use Facebook page to attract customers and give them up to date information about AKB48 such as about new CD or magazines, or TV programs that they are on.





You Tube: the Corporations transmit advertisements to viewers through You Tube for mainly three ways:
1) Advertisements coming up between each video clips
2) Google Ads coming up when you try to watch video clip (it is relates to the title of the
3) The corporations put advertisements as right or left side of the You Tube page. The corporations often use comment bar as their advertisement. The big difference between ordinal TV and You Tube is the advertisement cost, and flexibility of putting ads because of a large number of video clips exists. Also, popular commercial re-upload many times by different users.

Therefore, the corporation use social media as their effective way of strategy of advertising. From the view of the advertising cost, I think that demand of the corporations use of social media as advertising strategy will be increasing.

  1. I can't say I'm familiar with Ustream but thanks for the new info! I wonder is it only used for business purposes? What makes it different from YouTube?

  2. Ustream is used not only for business purposes but also used for sharing live movies at general base. Because every persons are able to use Ustream for free. What I wanted to say in my blog post is the cost of advertising can be inhibited if the corporation use it as business purpopses. Difference between You Tube and Ustream is just movie clip or live broadcasting. Ustream can make live broadcating.
